Media Access Protocol Impact on a WDMA Passive Star Photonic Network with Distributed Shared Memory System

چکیده
Abstract This paper develops a performance model of an optically interconnected parallel computer system operating in a distributed shared memory environment. The performance model is developed to reflect the impact of low level optical media access control and optical device switching latency on high level system performance. The photonic network is based on a passive star-coupled structure that exhibits optical self-routing through wavelength division multiple access channels. The performance of a generalized random access protocol is compared to an approach based on interleaved time multiplexing. Both protocols are designed to operate in a multiple-channel multiple-access environment and require each node to possess a wavelength tunable transmitter and a fixed (or slow tunable) receiver. A semi-markov model has been developed to study the interaction of the distributed shared memory architecture and investigate the performance of the two protocols with the photonic network. This analytical model has been validated by extensive simulation. The model is then used to examine the system performance with varying number of nodes and wavelength channels.

This paper studies the interaction between the access protocol used to provide arbitration for a wavelengthdivision multiple access photonic network and the cache coherence protocol required to support a distributed shared memory environment. The architecture is based on wavelength division multiplexing which enables multiple multi-access channels to be realized on a single optical fiber. Large...
متن کاملLatency Hiding Strategies Of Pre-allocation Based Media Access Protocols For WDM Photonic Networks
Media access protocols that de-emphasize the performance impact of propagation delay, packet processing and switching latency for an optically star-coupled system with pre-allocated WDMA channels are introduced and compared. The channels are pre-allocated to the nodes with this approach, where each node has a home channel that it uses either for all data packet transmission or reception. A home...

This paper introduces a collisionless wavelength division multiple access protocol for a passive star-coupled photonic network that possesses significant performance and flexibility advantages over alternative approaches. This protocol is compared in terms of relative performance and network architecture to the dynamic time-wavelength division multiaccess (DT-WDMA) protocol proposed in [1] thro...
متن کاملPerformance Impact of Switching Latency on WDMA Protocols
This paper investigates the impact of fast wavelength tunable device switching latency on the performance of media access protocols for star-coupled wavelength-division multiplexed photonic networks. The relative impact with a reservation based protocol (TDMA-C) and two pre-allocation based protocols (I-TDMA* and I-SA) are compared. TDMA-C is control channel based, with one WDM channel allocate...
